When I first started this project I went into it knowing it was going to be difficult. I wasn't sure how I was going to portray myself through magazine pieces, therefore I had to go into it with an open mind. I knew I was going to have to challenge myself and really think outside the box. One thing I've learned throughout my 16 years of life, is that people are very quick to judge. They tend to only see what they want to see, and because of this they don't necessarily see someone's true self. Similarly with art, an artist's work may not be completely understood by the viewer. Knowing this, made me worry that people may not correctly comprehend what I was trying to portray through my work. I started off my project by building my face with different skin tones. I used darker skin tones to define certain areas on my face. I then moved onto my eyes, mouth, and nose. While constructing my facial features I began to pick out my flaws. A thought crossed my mind, that maybe I should adjust my features to fit the beauty standards of today's world. But then I thought to myself, that it's my flaws that make me beautiful, so I let them be. After my face was complete, I began on my hair. For me this was the hardest part because I had some trouble finding the correct shades I wanted to use. Even now, after my project is complete, my hair is still my least favorite part of my portrait. Figuring out how to blend colors is definitely something I need to work on. Last but not least, I started on the background. I went into this knowing it was going to be difficult to try and use magazine pieces to enhance the viewers understanding of me as a person. I decided to design my background around a specific part of me that I wanted people to notice. I used different shades of blue to represent the sky to show my love for the outdoors, but to also show the viewers my love for those colors. I kept the background simple and precise to give it a clean look. It resembles how I like things to be organized and in their proper place. I wanted to use a simple background so my portrait wasn't so busy. That way, my face would be the focal point in this particular project. I believe self portraits can change how a person views you because with art, you can be very descriptive. Self portraits also show how the artist depicts themselves. Making a self portrait can be difficult because you never know how your audience is going to view your work. One thing I do know, is that self portraits can be very beneficial to create. While creating one, you can attempt to show others your true self, while at the same time you are learning more and thinking about your traits and your identity and what truly makes you, you. |
